Summary

What aspects of your life do you really control? What do you do when you cannot guarantee that things will turn out in your favour? And what can Stoicism teach us about how to live together?

In the past few years, Stoicism has been making a comeback。 But what exactly did the Stoics believe? In Lessons in Stoicism, philosopher John Sellars weaves together the key ideas of the three great Roman Stoics - Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius - with snapshots of their fascinating lives, to show us how their ideas can help us today。

In vivid prose, Sellars shows how the works of these three Stoics have inspired readers ever since, speaking as they do to some of the perennial issues that face anyone trying to navigate their way through life。 Their works, fundamentally, are about how to live - how to understand one's place in the world, how to cope when things don't go well, how to manage one's emotions and how to behave towards others。

Consoling and inspiring, Lessons in Stoicism is a deeply thoughtful guide to the philosophy of a valuable life。

Good primer on Stoic philosophy and how it can help in a world that's going to hell。 Good insights into what is important and what isn't。 The more philosophy I read the more I think this should be compulsory reading for anyone planning to run a country。 Good primer on Stoic philosophy and how it can help in a world that's going to hell。 Good insights into what is important and what isn't。 The more philosophy I read the more I think this should be compulsory reading for anyone planning to run a country。 。。。more

I realise this was only supposed to be a brief book, so it could not have as much analysis or detail about stoicism as I would be interested。 I think however it was too basic。There was some good basic stuff and clear writing which is why I gave it the stars I did。 However, I've read some short pieces of writing and even some of those are able to give me an "ah-ha" moment or make me feel I've encountered something original。 I didn't get that here。 I felt it was just all something I already knew o I realise this was only supposed to be a brief book, so it could not have as much analysis or detail about stoicism as I would be interested。 I think however it was too basic。There was some good basic stuff and clear writing which is why I gave it the stars I did。 However, I've read some short pieces of writing and even some of those are able to give me an "ah-ha" moment or make me feel I've encountered something original。 I didn't get that here。 I felt it was just all something I already knew or was common sense and I guess it just wasn't that special to me。 Maybe another reader with different experiences will feel differently。 Stoicism is certainly well looking into and not everyone will want a long book so this could be a valuable starter text。 。。。more

Great little book to have in the collection。 The author did a brilliant job of summing up stoicism in a couple of pages, with great suggestions for further reads。

I was looking for a book to better grasp the concept of stoicism。 I feared to end up on another empty self-help book, and looked for a resume of the essence of the work of a stoics instead of a "guide" on how to live like one。I am deeply satisfied with this book, it is well written (with nuances and makes you question yourself) and provides a measured content (nor too much or too little)。 I want to go deeper and the author provides a reading list at the end, which is a nice though on this journe I was looking for a book to better grasp the concept of stoicism。 I feared to end up on another empty self-help book, and looked for a resume of the essence of the work of a stoics instead of a "guide" on how to live like one。I am deeply satisfied with this book, it is well written (with nuances and makes you question yourself) and provides a measured content (nor too much or too little)。 I want to go deeper and the author provides a reading list at the end, which is a nice though on this journey to understand the ways of Stoicism。 。。。more

Great introduction to stoicism。 I’m a big follower of the stoic philosophy and this book acted like a great refresher on the key compensation of the philosophy: like focusing on the events that are within your control, contemplating the inevitability and uncertainty of death and championing the idea of a global community and the importance of stringing to achieve and maintain a good character。 Written in such an accessible way, I’d probably recommend this book as a short intro to stoicism rather Great introduction to stoicism。 I’m a big follower of the stoic philosophy and this book acted like a great refresher on the key compensation of the philosophy: like focusing on the events that are within your control, contemplating the inevitability and uncertainty of death and championing the idea of a global community and the importance of stringing to achieve and maintain a good character。 Written in such an accessible way, I’d probably recommend this book as a short intro to stoicism rather then let’s say Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, as the archaic language can be off putting。Would definitely recommend! 。。。more

Short books but meaningful, practical, still I am left confused。 This book tells Stoicism from the perspective multiple people, mainly around Seneca, Epictetus, and Aurelius and sometimes they contradict each other。For example, Seneca that mentions seeking hardships will help you to grow, however he also mentions that wise people avoid hardship and would prefer to live in peace。 I guess it is always comes down to the common things that they share。 Stoicism is about controlling our judgment as it Short books but meaningful, practical, still I am left confused。 This book tells Stoicism from the perspective multiple people, mainly around Seneca, Epictetus, and Aurelius and sometimes they contradict each other。For example, Seneca that mentions seeking hardships will help you to grow, however he also mentions that wise people avoid hardship and would prefer to live in peace。 I guess it is always comes down to the common things that they share。 Stoicism is about controlling our judgment as it triggers action。 Like we can see a fine meal as a dead fish and pigs or luxury car just a scrap of metal。 It is always best to reflect, for example what Aurelius do with his Meditation journal showing how vulnerable he is even though he is the great emperor of rome。 Stoicism help us to realize that we are just a small speck in the universe that constantly need to adapt and accept that things can happen。 I always wonder how people practicing Stoicism finding meaning in life? 。。。more
